What is Over-Pronation?
Over-pronation, also known as flat feet, occurs in the walking process when the arch of the foot collapses during weight bearing. This can lead to stress and/or inflammation of the plantar fascia, often causing severe discomfort and leading to other foot problems. It is worth noting that some people with flat feet may not experience pain immediately, and some never suffer from any discomfort at all.
Over-pronation can often lead to conditions such as:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel Spurs
- Metatarsalgia
- Post-tib Tendonitis
- Bunions.
You will find further details of these conditions on our Foot Problems Page.
The Causes
There are many causes of flat feet.
- Obesity, pregnancy or repeated pounding on a hard surface can all weaken the arch, leading to over-pronation
- Weakened muscles due to aging or heavy strain placed on the feet
- Standing or walking for long periods in high heels
- Wearing shoes that don’t provide proper arch support.
Treatment and Prevention at Foot Solutions
It is important to wear supportive, well-constructed footwear. People with over-pronation, should choose shoes that provide support and stability through the arch. Orthotics, particularly custom arch supports are recommended to aid arch support. Look for orthotics that are designed with medial rear-foot posting to prevent over-pronation. Footwear with a firm heel counter will give extra support and stability.
