It’s that time of the year when people head out to the slopes for their annual ski holiday. Spectacular views, fresh mountain air and the thrill of the descent. It’s a fabulous experience – unless of course your boots hurt. There’s nothing worse than painful ski boots which can soon feel like instruments of torture.
But, you don’t have to suffer, there is a solution…
Foot Solutions custom arch supports (which can quickly and easily replace the standard insoles in ski boots) help prevent pain and enhance performance.
How?
With standard insoles, it’s often the case (particularly for people with high arches) that only the ball and heel of the foot make contact with the bottom of the boot. Thus pressure of the body weight is focussed on two small areas.
Poor foot pressure distribution can quickly cause a burning sensation under the ball of the foot making skiers want to constantly lift the boot and ski in order to reduce the pressure and ease discomfort.
This in turn can result in an inability to maintain consistent pressure on the ski edges during turns, which negatively affects performance.
Because custom arch supports (also known as orthotics) distribute pressure evenly across the entire foot, they stop the possibility of intense pressure points and prevent arch collapse, which can cause the feet to flatten and press painfully against the sides of the ski boot. Having uniform support across the entire area of the foot also allows for much greater technical control.
In addition, custom arch supports improve stability by keeping the foot and ankle in a neutral position in which the foot is neither pronated (where the ankle rolls in), nor supinated, (when it rolls out). A neutral position helps most people by causing less fatigue and facilitating more natural movement at the ankle.
This can help make ‘turn mechanics’ more efficient by preventing incorrect pressure on the inside or outside edges of the skis.
At Foot Solutions, our highly trained consultants examine each foot to identify any concerns and conduct a comprehensive posture, gait and balance analysis. Then, using sophisticated digital mapping technology, a topographic map of each foot is produced, determining exactly where additional support is needed.
